Surfing around on social media one day I came across an exciting new adventure series of Christian books for kids. I jumped on the chance to review them because as the boys age I find there is a gap between early elementary books and youth books. However, I don’t want them to lose their love of reading for lack of good books at this level. And now I don’t have to worry because The Secret of the Hidden Scrolls has us hooked!!!
Make sure you enter our giveaway at the bottom of this post for your chance to win a copy of the first 2 books in this series of awesome Christian books for kids!
This wonderful new series of Christian books for kids is written by M.J Thomas. Similar to my scenario, when he went looking for fun books that would teach his 9 year old son about the Bible in a fun way, he came up short.
Instead of waiting around or giving up, Mr. Thomas took it into his own hands and began writing these wonderful christian books for kids that will teach them bible basics in an exciting new way. If you have a kid that loves adventure then they are sure to enjoy The Secret of the Hidden Scrolls.

The Secret of the Hidden Scrolls follows a pair of siblings, Peter (who is 9) and Mary (who is 10), as they discover some ancient scrolls in the home of their Great Uncle. These scrolls have the ability to transport them back in time to be present during key moments in biblical history!
Izzy, my 9 year old, wasn’t overly excited about the series when I first told him about them, but he quickly changed his mind. The book came in the mail and Izzy was instantly intrigued!
We began reading the book that day and finished it over the course of 3 days. It could easily have been read over 1 day, or, if we had more self control over a few weeks if we had done a chapter a day. However, we were so absorbed into the story that we read as much as the little boys would allow us to each time.
Each chapter is about 8-10 pages for a total of 12 chapters and 107 pages. Izzy could read this book on his own comfortably covering about a chapter a day in his reading time. However, we chose to use it as a read aloud book for our review.

This book jumps right into the beginning of Peter and Mary’s adventure. It begins moving quickly so as to get your kids intrigued in the story line – and it works! And yet there is still great character development and Izzy felt like he could really connect with Peter’s character.
The story begins with Peter and Mary (and their dog Hank) who are staying with their Great Uncle Solomon while their parents are travelling to Africa. Great Uncle Solomon was an archaeologist and his home is filled with ancient artifacts.
He tells the children about his most prized possession, the ancient scrolls, that he found while searching in the desert by the Dead Sea in Israel.
The Scrolls contain the truth you seek.
Break the seal,
Unroll the scroll,
And you will see the past unfold.
Amazing adventures are in store
For those who follow the lion’s roar!
The children are told that only a chosen person can open the scrolls and that the chosen one will travel back in time to biblical events. This person will unlock the secrets of the past and be able to prove that the Bible is true!
Awoken in the deep of night by a lion’s roar, the children find the scrolls in Great Uncle Solomon’s library.
Helped by the angel Michael along their journey, they have 7 days to solve the secret of the scroll and get back home.
While trying to solve the message that is written in Hebrew, Peter and Mary live through the 7 days of the creation of the world.
Even as we read, I found myself absorbed into the story. Living out the days of creation and hearing God’s mighty voice as he declared his creation was good certainly breathed new life into the creation story that we were so familiar with.
This book in the series of Christian books for kids helped to teach the order of creation based on a literal interpretation of the 7 days of creation. The children encounter many creatures, and also have a brush with Satan in the Garden of Eden.
At the end of the book there is a reference section. As such, it lists the specific areas of the bible where the people, places and events in the book are found. We used these references to read the actual scriptures. They are also a great tool for discernment and discussing our responsibility to confirm the word of God for ourselves.
I loved this book! It was a good mix of adventure and Christianity. I can’t wait to get the next one that is coming.
