Have you ever wondered how to teach a summary of the whole bible to your children? How do you present the big picture from Genesis all the way to Revelation? Answers in Genesis just released a new bible summary book. The 10 Minute Bible Journey that will take you through an overview of the entire bible in one month by reading only 10 minutes a day!
The 10 Minute Bible Journey is a book that I have been looking for for quite some time now. I didn’t grow up in the church. Trying to learn the bible on my own as an adult was challenging.
Starting to read the bible without any prior knowledge was overwhelming and confusing. I didn’t understand the global picture that the bible was offering.
But, with the 10 Minute Bible Journey, you get just that! It’s an overview of the whole entire bible so that you can understand the big picture before digging in deeper to God’s word! I haven’t come across a better bible summary book than this.
You can – and you should! The author, Dale Mason, actually addressed this in the introduction of the book. The purpose of the 10 Minute Bible Journey is to give it’s readers a synopsis of all the major bible events and how they tie together to tell the story of salvation. Also, presented in chronological order, it is easy to see how all the events in the bible fit together.
It’s a tool to help you get a deeper understanding of the overall story God has painted throughout history.
At the end there is some great information on how to use this book. Designed the be a broad overview, the author suggests reading through the chapters of the book before tackling a full reading plan through the bible.
There are 52 chapters in the book and each chapter is only 2 pages long. You could easily read through this book in a month reading for just 10 minutes a night. Or, you could focus on one chapter per week for a year, diving in deeper into theory and apologetics with children (and adults) already familiar with a lot of the bible stories.
The author has also provided questions that you can ask your kids if you use this during family devotional time. And, there are questions and ideas for using this book as part of a small group study as well.
Each page spread covers one major event or story from the bible. In the top upper corner of the start of each chapter is the timeline date as well as a snippet of information about one of the key points of the event.
The story is summarized and any relevant information is given. For example, after the birth of Jesus in the stable, the author explains how there were no wise men present. This is a common misconception based on our cultural traditions for Christmas. (BTW… the wise men did come, just not on the day Jesus was born!)
Any other key passages in the bible relating to the story are highlighted in a box in the lower corner of the second page as well as the key verse. These scripture verses would be a perfect starting place for memorization and copy work!
There is also a wrap up section at the end of each chapter that reads out like a prayer giving us ways to focus and pray about what we have learned.
Between many chapters there are wonderful illustrations that would be appealing to a younger audience. They depict scenes of the stories being read about along with a description or scripture to complement it.
Finally, there are some bonus sections throughout the book that help to explain other contexts found in the bible such as polygamy, angels, the ice age, the 12 disciples, and more! This bible summary book really does cover everything.
I read a chapter out loud to both Joel (my husband) and our 9 year old Izzy. The information was easily understandable to them. Izzy even asked several questions that helped us dig deeper. It was wonderful to see him comparing what he had heard to what he had just read in the bible.
Not sure how you would answer those deeper questions that kids just love to ask? Check out Do you know how to answer these tough bible questions?
Izzy and I will be using the 10 Minute Bible Journey this year as a complement to our devotional time. However, I would recommend this book be used with an adult for children in the lower and upper elementary levels. But, high school students would be able to read and follow the book comfortably without extra guidance.
Finally, this bible summary book is going to be a great addition to our homeschool library and I can see myself pulling it out time and again to help add context into our daily learning and to keep that big picture in focus.
You can order your copy of The 10-Minute Bible Journey through Christianbook.com where they have both a PDF and the beautiful hardcover edition available.
