Danny The Champion of the World – Awesome Read Aloud Review

Our family has always been really big on reading.  And now that the little boys are getting older and can play a bit longer and sometimes even sit and listen a bit longer, we are reading more chapter books during the day time again.  This month our awesome read aloud review book is Danny the Champion of the World!

Danny the Champion of the World – Awesome Read Aloud Review

Awesome Read Alouds - Danny The Champion of the World! Come and learn more about this great book from Roald Dahl. A funny and sweet story that the whole family can enjoy!

I have been a long time lover of all things Roald Dahl, and this book did not disappoint!  It actually came highly recommended by a friend of mine whose sweet girls enjoyed it.  This book is a short fictional chapter book perfect for readers just starting to read chapter books independently.  Or, as we did, perfect for a funny family read aloud!

This novel is about Danny, a young boy, and his father.  They live alone, just the two of them, on the outskirts of a small town where they run their family business.  But what Danny doesn’t know, is that his father has a side hobby – poaching pheasants from a rich land owner.  When he discovers his father’s secret, he wants to join in on the action.

Danny’s father agrees to let him join in and they begin to form a plan for the greatest poaching event ever.  As the story progresses, the relationship between father and son grows and deepens in a wonderful way.  Danny’s successful plan leads him to become known amongst family and friends as the champion of the world, but not without a few bumps, twist and laugh out loud turns along the way.

The Best Things About This Book…

This story is full of sweet moments between a father and a son in what is really a coming of age story.  Danny begins to really see his father as a person, and not just the man who raises him.  Moreover, Danny has a positive relationship with his dad and really values that.

The chapters are short enough for a little one to sit and listen to or play quietly for.  And the story is captivating enough that it’s hard to put the book down at the end of a chapter.  (On good days we would often read 3 or 4 chapters in one go!)

Mr. Dahl’s character descriptions draw you in, making you feel like you really know them.  The lovable ones are hard not to connect with!  And the bad ones are just despicable.

Roald Dahl is good at drawing in subtle silly humour and this book is no different!  The crazy antics that his two main characters get up to will have your kids in stitches!

Izzy’s Review:

My favourite part was the chapter where Danny and his Dad had to sneak around to poach the pheasants.  It was cool because they were like spies.

I would recommend this book because it's awesome - the story line is thrilling! -Izzy (9) on… Click To Tweet

The Start of a Wonderful Adventure…

If you have loved other Roald Dahl books then you will not be disappointed with this one!  And if this is your first one – you are in for a treat!  Grab a copy of Danny the Champion of the World for your family today!

Did you know that you can also get a full box set of the Roald Dahl Collection with 15 different stories!  It includes some of his most popular titles including: The BFG, Matilda, James and the Giant Peach, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.  Many of Roald Dahl’s books have also been turned into really great kids’ movies.

Furthermore, my family loves watching novels that we have read come to life on the screen!  My favourite of all the Roald Dahl movies has to be The BFG.

The movie follows the book to a tee and the characters have been well cast.  There are scary giants, but this movie has been filmed in such a way that even my 3 year old was able to watch it without being frightened.  The cinematography was also absolutely stunning!
