Garden Update #3 | 10 things I accomplished this week in the garden

I didn’t make New Years Resolutions this year.  Instead, I made gardening goals!  I didn’t want to pick things that I couldn’t stick to and wouldn’t achieve.  Gardening is also very important to me.  I love being outside, growing plants fills me with awe and has the side benefit of feeding my family.  We’ve also been trying to get a garden set up here since we moved in 3 1/2 years ago and I am determined this is going to be the year.  So, without further ado, here is my garden update for what we accomplished this week.

You can read all about my gardening goals in my post 5 Gardening Goals for 2017.

My main gardening goals are:

  1. Create the best soil possible for the garden.
  2. Kill the brambles
  3. Finish the garden
  4. Maintain what we have
  5. Plant dahlias

After the crazy amount of snow we had over the last few weeks….

It rained for several days and we were back to square one!  We’re very lucky that our new yard isn’t like our old one.  At our old place the ground was heavily clay based and we always joked that we had a swimming pool in the backyard over the winter and early spring.  But, not so here!  After 2 days of heavy rains, all that snow is gone, all the rain is gone, and the ground in the back yard is dry!!!

We finally got out to work in the garden for a few days this week.

Here’s how we’re making out:

Create the best soil possible for the garden

  • covered up the aging chicken manure in the new garden area with cardboard, then rabbit manure, followed by straw and then leaf mulch on top
  • ordered 12 yards of top soil which are now sitting in my driveway

Kill the Brambles

  • cleared a 17 x 12 foot section of blackberry brambles, root, root stalk and all (as much as we could find anyways)
  • taken 1 load of brambles to the municipal compost with a second trailer load ready to go

Finish the Garden

  • started moving top soil into the garden (4 wheelbarrows down…only a thousand more to go…)
  • I bought all the seeds for planting this year!
  • Joel got 4 free pallets from work that are 12 feet long each and we’re going to use them for the garden fence

In the third garden update you can come and see the progress we are making on our gardening goals for 2017. Are the brambles winning or are we? We also have 2 steps forward and 2 steps back. Come see what our garden looks like now!

Maintain What we Have

  • 60 bulbs of garlic have sprouted from our fall planting of 88
  • started pruning 1 of the 2 mature apple trees in the yard
  • dug up my blueberries bushes and potted them until we create a new area for a patch next year

Plant Dahlias

  • I’ve been scouting out good spots and have picked a 9 ft. by 9 ft. area to make a dahlia patch
  • I have been researching how to best stake dahlias because last year it was like London Bridge and it was so sad to lose all my beautiful blooms!

2 steps forward….2 steps back??

We did have a few minor mishaps that have slowed down some of our progress.  First, we lost our bunny.  He nibbled through the wiring of his cage and we haven’t seen him since.  Second, I awoke this morning  to….SNOW!  It snowed for a good hour straight, then it stopped. We only got an inch of snow and it melted away in the warmth of the afternoon sun.  Back to square one.

Stay tuned for my garden plan reveal in my next garden update!

Great photos! It’s going to be so wonderful to see it all come together as spring brightens the garden up 🙂 Cheers, Mary Jane

Hi Mary Jane 🙂 Thanks so much for your kind words. We are so excited to grow some good quantities of food this year (fingers crossed).

You are so good! We moved into our house when I was 8 months pregnant and now I have a 7 month old and a garden that needs LOTS of attention. As he gets older I hope to find more time to spend in it though! #KCACOLS

    • Nadine says:

Well it’s taken us 3 1/2 years of being in this house to get it up and going!!! And hopefully we’ll be ready soon. Every time I work in the garden it snows again!! We have had the craziest winter!!!

Great plan, Nadine. In this part of Carolina, the red-clay soil is the biggest challenge. We had luck with blackberries, although birds got a good bit of them, last year.

    • Nadine says:

Thanks Eli 🙂 I didn’t know that Carolina had red clay soil. My husband is from Newfoundland and they have that same kind of soil.

  • I stay in an apartment but I’ve always wanted to keep a garden. This really inspired me. I think I’m going to keep a few planters just so that we have plenty of fresh air. Thank you!

  • Our neighbors are renovating this summer. There's been a lot of activity to keep my curious trio entertained. But the best was the excavator (or elevator as Mickey Blue calls it) that showed up ON HIS BIRTHDAY!!! #bestbirthdaypresentever Shout out to all the construction loving boy moms out there! Can I get a YEAH?!?! #boylife #boymom

  • #captainunderpants .... well, captain #easyups LOL. Mickey Blue was given a pack for his 3rd birthday and Little Lou approves 😝 my boys are such hams, they are always making me laugh! I 💕 #momlife !!! What funny or sweet things have your kids been up to?
  • Isn't #lettuce cool the way that it grows up and out in a spiral fashion!?! This is our first time growing #iceberg lettuce - it's my hubby's favourite! We've had a weird year with growing lettuces, this one is enjoying the whole stretch of garden to itself because none of the other seeds have sprouted, even from the second seeding! I'm going to be potting some to start and transplant! I NEED LETTUCE (I ❤ salad). How's your lettuce doing this year? Got any #tips or #tricks for me?
  • One of the best things about #homeschooling is the chance for a deep and strong relationship between siblings that would otherwise have no contact with each other!! They're still siblings, they are great together most of the time but sometimes they drive each other crazy and push each other's buttons. But if they didn't have all the time together that they do I don't think I'd get near as many sweet moments like this, curled up on the couch together sharing a moment 💕 What heart melting moments have you had recently?
  • I had never seen a #potato flower before! Growing a garden is so much fun. I can't believe how much I've learned this year and how something can grow from almost nothing. Our #Russianblue potatoes are doing so well - I can't wait to dig them up at the end of the season and see if the beauty below the ground will be as rewarding as it's been above! Anyone else got potatoes in the garden? What variety did you pick?
