Interview with a second grade homeschooler.

Last week I was Inspired by Amy from The Hmmm… Schooling Mom.  So, I decided I wanted to interview my second grade homeschooler.  After reading the interviews with her two boys; Interview With a Ten-Year-Old Homeschooler & Interview With a Nine-Year-Old Homeschooler, I was curious to see how my own homeschooler of similar age would respond to her questions.

Here is my interview with a second grade homeschooler.

Izzy is currently 8 years old  He has been homeschooled his whole life.  During this time his older brother, T, has gone back and forth between school and homeschooling.  Mickey Blue and Little Lou, Izzy’s 2 younger brothers, aren’t school-aged yet.  Izzy is a complete sweetheart with a great sense of humour and he’s always goofing around and trying to make us laugh.  He took this interview very seriously though and it was really fun to see another side of him.

Question: How old are you and how long have you been homeschooling?

Answer: 8, and I’ve been homeschooling for my whole life.

I think it's interesting that homeschooled kids almost always say they've been homeschooled theirโ€ฆ Click To Tweet

Question: What is your favourite thing about homeschooling?

Answer: I get a lot of free recess because most kids don’t get that much in regular school.

Question: What is your least favourite thing about homeschooling?

Answer: Nothing.  I love everything about homeschooling.

Question: If someone asked you what homeschooling is or what you do all day, what would you tell them?

Answer: Math, phonics, bible, sometimes play, go outside and play, sometime eat lunch while I’m working, play drums on Monday and Tuesday.

Question: Describe your perfect homeschooling day…

Answer: A day when I’m feeling really into school and I have a day off from dictation or copywork because I worked really hard and finished a poem or writing a letter.  If we get to go for a long hike or go swimming.  And getting to jump on mom’s bed with Mickey Blue (2).

Question: Do you think you would ever be interested in going to public school?

Answer: Yes and no.

Me: Why?

Answer: Because I could meet more people and make lots of friends.  But I wouldn’t want to go because of bully’s, having 6 hours of school because we only have to do an hour of school at home.

Question: What do you wish you could do more of?

Answer: Go on more hikes, and have more days to go swimming after school, have more time to spend with mom.

Question: How do you learn best, by seeing, hearing or doing?

Answer: Seeing – like seeing someone do it first.

Question: What does homeschooling mean?

Answer: It’s doing school at home and just being registered with a program but not actually working with a program.

Question: Do you like being around your brothers all the time?

Answer: Yes and sometimes no.  Sometimes Mickey fights me too hard and hits and kicks me.  Sometimes he loves playing with me a lot.

Question: Do you think you would have the same relationship with your brothers if you went to school?

Answer: Probably not.  I wouldn’t get to see them as much.

Question: What is your absolute favourite thing you’ve learned?

Answer: I think writing.  I like writing stories and I think it’s really fun and it’s amazing to be able to do it.  It’s the best thing in the world!

Pretty insightful little guy!   I love that he is so creative.  He has an amazing imagination and he gets to spend his days using it.  And I had no idea he wanted to be an archaeologist!  Time for a unit study on rocks and fossils!

So what do you think your homeschooler would say?  Were you surprised by anything my child said?

I’d love to hear from you!  I read and respond to each of my comments personally.  If you enjoyed learning more about my family, consider subscribing to my blog (in the form below) to get all my new posts right in your inbox!

  • #messy tables usually cause me grief! But not this time, when I turned around and saw our #kitchentable a complete cluttered #mess, I felt happy ๐Ÿ’• today my table reflects the mom I want to be for my kids always. We went on a #naturewalk together, #collected leaves, make #leafprint artwork and enjoyed each other! Our messy kitchen table reflects the love and learning that happened here today. What about you? What made you smile today?
  • This #sweet and #serious boy is on the count down to #threeyears! Time goes so fast it's crazy!!! If you've been following my feed for awhile you know how old my baby is! If you multiply his age and Mickey Blues age - they are the square root of my next oldest son! He just had a birthday. How old did he turn??? #math #riddles
  • I'm not good at #mushroom identification but I still like to #photograph them!! We found these little ones growing on the side of the road on our #naturewalk this morning. Izzy and I are starting a #couchto5k program and today was our first #run. We enjoyed our walk back looking at leaves and everything growing along the side of the road. He wants to learn to #identifymushroom . Anyone that can #identifythis ?
  • Things are certainly coming along well in the #garden ! The #garlic is about 2 feet tall, the #potato plants are ready to mound up, as our everbearing #strawberries have flowers on them! Despite the cooler than normal #weather at this time of year, everything is growing and growing well! I can't wait to walk through the garden in full bloom and pick our food ๐Ÿ’•
  • Happy Mother's Day everyone! I don't get to see or be with my mom this year so I wrote this letter to her for #mothersday. It's my #mothersdaygift to her and my #encouragement to #moms and #daughters everywhere. #linkinbio ๐Ÿ’•
