With 3 weather fronts moving in along our beautiful coast line, we are in for a week of rain, winds, thunder, lighting and anything else mother nature brings along….
So what do you do when it’s raining out?
We decided that instead of having a day of screen time (which is so easy to do) we would turn our living room into a fabulous fort! When my older 2 kids were younger I actually researched the best way to make blanket forts. I know! I struggle with perfectionism just a little…. Truth is, we don’t have a lot of furniture, at least not the awesome fort making kind so after gleaning what I could from Fort Building for Dummies, toddler mayhem quickly ensued.
This time we went all out. I let the kids rearrange the furniture in the living room so the blankets would fit our engineering marvel a little better. It was a lot of fun, I was thinking about when I was a kid and building forts and how coziness was always key.
In the kids fort there are little nooks for curling up, tunnels for crawling through, a reading zone with lot of pillows and toys tucked away into little areas for playing. It was everything that I hoped…..for about 5 seconds. Then the reality of attempting anything with a toddler reared its blonde curly hair.
He tried, he really did. But he kept standing up and that would pull the blankets down. We reinforced the roof height with broom handles. But by this time he thought it was more of a game to pull the blankets off. It was a lesson in patience for my 8 year old, Izzy, who was obviously frustrated.
Our toddler is now napping, the baby is sleeping, and Izzy is curled up in the fort playing with the cat. Inside a fortress, in a world of imagination, this is what I remember rainy days being like when I was a kid!
So mother nature, bring it on! We are ready.
Stay dry out there…
